Designers Dashing Loves: Meet Lisa Flake

Caldwell Flake Interiors is a mother and daughter based design studio in Birmingham, Alabama. The child of a designer, Lisa Flake grew up surrounded by fabrics, blueprints, renderings, wallpaper samples and endless creative brainstorming. She was raised to take note of beauty in everything around her. In 1998, Lisa joined her mother in the design field and brought with her boundless enthusiasm and natural talent. By listening, observing and taking a fearless creative approach, she can transform a room into a work of art, while seamlessly incorporating convenience, practicality and the clients distinct individuality.

Lisa's philosphy is that every home has something to say.She believes it is their task to collect and bull together the elements that give it a voice. To unearth a home's hidden talents and foster its capacity for creative expression. To teach it to sbeak in terms of space, light. color: shape and texture. To compose visual anecdotes that are all at once classic, curious and calming. Our task is to seek out the true character of a home. To capture the pure essence of the people who love to live there. And to beautifully set the stage for the daily acts of life to unfold.

When designing a room, where’s the best place to start?

I always like to build from the rug up. It’s so much easier to start with a rug and then pick fabrics and paint colors because you have so much more control over paints and fabrics than you do finding the perfect rug plus the rug is usually an investment. If you decide you don’t want a custom rug, but would prefer a neutral cut carpet then I start with fabrics.

What’s your advice when purchasing an investment rug?
Use a designer so that mistakes are not made, buy from a reputable store, and make sure you are buying something you can live with for awhile!
Your three go-to paint colors.
Ben Moore Vanilla Milkshake , Ben Moore 2121-10 that is just called Gray and Sherwin Williams Iron Ore. I use lots of color but usually like it to pop against white or dark walls.
What design rule do you follow?
Never hang a mirror without something under it! Unless of course its a trumeau or full length mirror.
Where do you find your inspiration?
In my clients. I like my clients houses to be theirs and not look like others. I want you to know I have been there, but for the clients to feel at home and not feel like they are living in someone else’s house.
If you could take only one thing from your house, what would it be?
My Moroccan cobalt blue vases on my dining room table that I built the room and honestly the rest of my house around.
Your go-to playlist at home?
I LOVE music and have it playing at all times. Holy by Justin Bieber and Lover by Taylor Swift will be on every playlist I make mixed in with some Widespread Panic, Phish, Morgan Wallen, Eric Church, Chance the Rapper, Tyler Childers, Macklemore and Sara Evans… so you can say I like a variety!
The best way to spend a weekend.
I love to travel with my husband, daughters and friends. Jared and I want to see the world and have a bucket list of places we like to check off..but there is no prettier sunset than from our Lake Martin cabin.
